Protein Sources Beyond Chicken: 9 Foods That Pull Their Weight

CadieuxJune 22, 2026Protein Education

Chicken gets all the credit. It's not the only one doing the work.

If you're trying to hit a protein number without eating the same grilled breast every single day, here are nine foods worth rotating in.

**Eggs**

Still one of the most complete proteins available, and one of the easiest to cook in under five minutes. Boiled, scrambled, in a sandwich — it doesn't ask for effort.

**Paneer**

A vegetarian staple that's earned its reputation. Works in a curry, on its own, or straight off the pan with a little salt and pepper.

**Greek yoghurt**

Thicker, more protein-dense than regular yoghurt. Works as breakfast, a snack, or a base for something else.

**Lentils and dal**

Slower to cook, but a real protein source that most Indian kitchens already have stocked. Combine with rice for a more complete amino acid profile.

**Peanut butter**

Easy to overlook because it's "just" a spread. A spoonful adds real protein without needing a separate meal.

**Soy and tofu**

Often underused outside specific cuisines, but a legitimate plant protein that takes on whatever flavor you cook it in.

**Whey or plant protein powder**

Not a meal replacement, but a quick top-up when the day doesn't leave room for a full plate.

**Fish**

Lighter than red meat, still a strong protein source, and a good rotation option if chicken is in every other meal already.

**Bread — yes, bread**

Most bread is just carbs. But not all of it has to be. The right loaf can carry real protein instead of just filling space on the plate — which means your sandwich is doing more than holding things together.

**Where this leaves you**

You don't need to eat the same three foods on repeat to hit your protein goals. Rotate. Mix it up. Let your bread carry weight too.
