How to Read a Bread Label Without Getting Fooled
The front of a bread pack is marketing. The back is where the truth lives.
Here's what to actually check before you decide a loaf belongs in your basket.
**Start with the ingredient list, not the protein number**
A short list of ingredients you recognize is a good sign. A long list of stabilizers, gums, and additives usually means the bread was built to survive a shelf, not to be eaten fresh.
**Look at the order, not just the names**
Ingredients are listed by quantity, highest first. If sugar or refined flour leads the list, the "protein" claim on the front is doing a lot of work to distract you.
**Compare protein to carbs, not protein alone**
A loaf can list a decent protein number and still be mostly carbs. Check the ratio. That tells you more than the number on its own ever will.
**Check for an actual fibre count**
Fibre slows digestion and helps the protein do its job properly. A bread with protein and no fibre is only telling half the story.
**Ask if it's actually been tested**
"Lab-tested" should come with a name attached — an actual laboratory, an actual report. If a brand can't point to one, that claim is just a sentence on a wrapper.
**Where this leaves you**
You don't need a nutrition degree to read a bread label well. You need five minutes and a habit of checking past the front of the pack.
